BUS TRIPS AND SPECIAL EVENTS

9300C – Hoffman, Soho and More!   $90

Road to California Staff

Wednesday, 9 hrs, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Our first stop today will be at Hoffman California-International Fabrics. In 1924, Rube Hoffman founded Hoffman California Fabrics, selling wool flannels to California department stores and clothing manufacturers. Rube played an important role in the growth of California's textile industry. His sons, Philip and Walter, both championship surfers, joined the company in the 1950s and combined their passion for traveling to their favorite surfing spots with discovering unusual printing processes and different types of fabrics. Soon, Hoffman Fabrics abounded with their original designs of surfing scenes, beach life, and underwater settings.

Today, three generations of Hoffman’s are actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the company. More than eighty employees are involved with filling orders and shipping fabric to retail fabric stores, craft shops, quilt stores, apparel makers, wholesale distributors, and manufacturers throughout the world. The Design Department creates more than 800 designs of colorful screen prints and luscious Bali batiks each year. We will have an opportunity to learn more about designing and printing this beautiful fabric while we tour the facility.

We’re including a new stop this year! Have you traveled to New York City? Then perhaps you’ve been to Purl Soho, a haven for textile artists from all over the world. It’s located in the trendy Soho district in New York City. They carry yarn, fabric, and just about anything you can think of that is related to the textile arts! No, we’re not taking a side trip to NYC! 😊 But we are going to visit their Warehouse in Irvine where you will find many of the items that they sell at the store in New York! Discounted? No, but I’m sure you’ll find some things you just have to have. For example, they carry Liberty of London cottons, a variety of intriguing fabrics for art quilters, wool for those of you that are into wool applique, sewing notions from all over the world, some beautiful wools for your knitting/crochet projects, and much, much more! We have included a link to the main store in Soho (https://www.purlsoho.com/ ). The items on their website are available through their online store. The Warehouse in Irvine fills those orders. So if you see it online, you’ll probably see it at the Warehouse!

Orange Quilt Bee (www.orangequiltbee.com). This shop carries a wide variety of fabrics . . . novelty prints for kids, flannels, reproductions, wools and wool kits, a large selection of batiks, a nice selection of Kaffe fabrics and brights and solids for the modern quilters. They have a nice selection of patterns, books, and kits with samples hung throughout the store to inspire you.
