You’ll have a blast with some of the most amazingly fast and easy techniques used to make this quilt. The gentle curves in the blocks are easy and forgiving and don’t require any fuss. Are you longing to make a one-of-a-kind quilt that expresses your unique thoughts, affections and beliefs…but you’re scared to death of embellishments and not sure how to choose blocks, borders and such? This class is for you. We’ll discuss a variety of helpful (and easy to stitch) blocks, as well as how to search for meaningful patterns. We’ll also look at incorporating UFOs and estate hand-me-downs into your work, as well as easy ways to embellish your quilt, including beading and other techniques anyone can do! Class includes an improvise-as-you-go sampler to explore various memory techniques, including a make-it-in-class fabric transfer that really works! (All you need are a few black and white photocopies of your favorite photo…or use the instructor’s.) Handout includes pattern possibilities.

Learn my style of machine appliqué while creating and personalizing your own Ninepatcher Character. Character is chosen from one of a dozen in my Ninepatcher-A Family Reunion Pattern. And my easy-peasy covered pillow method will also be taught. No button, zippers, set seams etc. you will be whipping up pillows for every month of the year in no time! Students will choose from 4 different background patterns for their pillow front. Ideas for individual appliqué accessories: a flower, a coffee mug, rotary cutter, sports equipment, team or school pennant, let your imagination run! Each and every pillow will be a student’s own! Most students will complete the entire pillow in class with just the hand sewing of the binding left for home.

Many of us are self-taught which means some of the basics just fell through the cracks! Learn the fastest, easiest and most fun ways to sew traditional blocks! This “Hints from Heloise” type class will teach you all of the tricks that the experts have been using for years – and some I’ve made up! In class, the blocks will be precut so we can start sewing immediately! This class also offered on Wednesday as 3005.

6009 – The Great Gluestick/Screwdriver Caper $70

This is a class to learn the basic method using gluesticks and screwdrivers to turn and prepare edges for appliqué.
We will create the whole design before we stitch it down to give us more control and precision. We will learn about making fine points and inward curves as well as how to make easy bias strips. Taking this class first gives the student advantages and a head start for other appliqué classes. The pattern is a lovely red Camellia in a bowl. This class also offered on Wednesday as 3007

6010 – Thread Art Extreme $130

Come and see how fun and easy it is to do thread art on your longarm. This class is based on Sue’s thread counting technique and takes you step-by-step through 4 stages of thread art. From outline texture straight through to full fill in thread art tapestry. Students will use a variety of different threads to shade and highlight one of Sue’s original designs and learn to master many different thread color exchanges and deal with each brand to create perfect tension both front and back. She will discuss batting and which is best for reversible and one-sided thread art. She will show you how easy it is to complete your work of art by adding texture with her unique background fillers!! Sue will have many of her award winning quilts on display during the class for student to examine up close and personal. Experience a world of beauty created with thread, in this high speed, heart pounding, thread art extreme!! Bring a camera if you would like to take pictures of Sue’s thread art quilts.

6011 – It’s Pointless! Appliqué $80

Learn to create detailed pictorial images with basic appliqué, yet never having to stitch a single point! The secret is my “over and under” appliqué technique. My pictorial quilts are all created this way, as I layer the appliqué pieces from background to foreground. Occasionally pieces have to be stitched side-by-side, and this is when the technique comes into play. Students can choose from a variety of my simple patterns.

Do you want to take the fear out of color selection and increase the beauty of the quilts you make? If so, then this is the perfect workshop for you! This class in a synopsis of the 12 lessons laid out in Heather’s newest book Color and Design; the Basics & Beyond (avail. Nov. 2010). In this full day workshop you will be introduced to classic color theory as you create your own one of a kind, color scrapbook using Heather’s blank workbook and your choice of thousands of colorful papers. Heather will help you understand the importance of color interaction and relationships as well as color scale and value and she will introduce you to classic color combinations and basic design skills. Includes a trunk show of more than 50 quilts.

This class is for those who truly LOVE the seashore, the ocean, lakes and ponds. There are no patterns because Nature is not as simple as a pattern. She LOVES variations and imperfection! In this class students will learn my own “Rough Cut” technique to chew out branches of coral and seaweed and fish. We’ll learn perspective and 4 principles of composition that will make your seascapes sing. When you leave, you’ll be able to create any sea/waterscape that you can dream up, I promise. But be sure to bring a “crummy” paper scissors to class!!!

Or, with just a few fat quarters of hand-dyed fabrics and a little ingenuity, you can stitch a beautiful piece of art for your wall. The three-dimensional effect is created by the careful placement of values within the quilt blocks. Simple borders and custom framing make it ready for display. Quilting is optional.

Due to the ease of the Square in a Square® system, only 7 basic squares and 2 basic diamonds are required for each block. During class, you will learn the Square in a Square® technique that eliminates the triangle hassle normally seen with cutting and sewing of multiple pieced blocks.  You will also enjoy learning professional pressing and rotary cutting techniques and will be amazed at the speed and accuracy of this method.

Daiwabu fabric is used exclusively to make this Seminole-pieced basket. Seminole piecing is an old technique accredited to the Seminole Indians. It is a strip piecing technique which can be used to embellish quilts, bags, pillowcases and, of course, baskets.
