Description:
Father Christmas is made with hand dyed wool on antique linen. Perfect if you are a beginner to wool applique or a seasoned stitcher. The wool is all hand dyed, felted and ready for the needle. The best part is the fabulous linen that we have found. Imported from Europe, it is estimated that this beautiful fabric was hand woven sometime between 1870 and 1910. While I stitch my samples on antique linen it is not uncommon to find the long pieces of flax that did not get removed during the carding process. 100 years ago that could have been a problem....for me it is a bonus!! Please understand that the linen that may come in your kit may look different from the sample. I never know what I will have available but be assured that it will be from the same time period and I do my best to find it in the same size. Finished piece measures approx 18" x 24".

Join us for an action packed “Play before you Pay Creative Grids® event. All rulers and fabrics are provided so you can make four to five different blocks – and learn additional techniques – in a fun and easy class. Create blocks that include fudge factors so beginners to experts can sew them in a matter of minutes. Make perfect “Flying Geese” blocks by trimming them AFTER you sew the bias edges. Sew “Cat’s in the Cradle” blocks without ever cutting a triangle. Cut charm squares at an angle and trim them after sewing so every block is the exact same size. Bonus? The angled seams never have to match! Then piece a “Scrap Crazy” block in a matter of minutes and see how this is the perfect place to showcase all those decorative stitches on your machine! If time allows, make half-square triangles from 10” squares and turn them into a “Delectable Mountains” block or make a quick and easy piano key border. Along the way, learn tips and tricks for rotary cutting as well. After all, don’t we all want to reduce cutting time and have more time to sew?

Upon arrival in Palm Springs a local step-on guide will join us to offer a glimpse into Palm Springs today and yesterday. We will travel through the beautiful city of Palm Springs, California, and learn history and facts about the playground of the stars. Your entertaining guide will drive through the famous neighborhood of Las Palmas, regale you with stories and play a fun and often hilarious game of "Guess The Stars Homes." This area is comprised of all custom homes and boasts an amazing collection of fascinating architecture including the popular mid-century modern homes in such great demand today. During our tour we will see ~50 homes – some of them once belonged to Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley (2 homes in Palm Springs), Kirk Douglas, Leonardo DiCaprio, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Marilyn Monroe and more!

After our driving tour you’ll have time for a scatter lunch in downtown Palm Springs. Then we’re off to the Living Desert and Zoo in Palm Desert. Explore the expansive zoo and gardens via a Safari Tram. One could spend the day here, but today we’ll give you just a glimpse of the beauty of the Southwest deserts.

And, last but not least, we’ll stop at Monica’s Beads and Creations in Palm Desert. It’s a fabulous quilt store with beads! The selection of fabrics and patterns is extensive. You’ll surely find something here that simply must go home with you!

Description:
Morning session: The Antique English Pleated Log Cabin Block. The pleated quilt-as-you-go block is constructed (pieced) and quilted at the same time without batting. The blocks are then joined front-to-front and the backs’ foundation fabric whip-stitched together. This block’s casual sewing is an excellent introduction to hand stitching and has the advantage of being totally portable for today’s busy quiltmakers. Pleated Log Cabin is a super addition to your quilting skills since you can sew a block at any time and any place, and is a pattern you can teach to kids. Afternoon session: The 19th Century Pineapple Pattern. Make a quilt just like your great-grandmother did! Looks complicated but is so easy! All kinds of fabrics can be used in this project. Constructed without special rulers, the 19th Century Pineapple is a gentle introduction to hand sewing and harks back to the old-fashioned quilting bee. Great for first-time quilters or experienced hands who enjoy a portable project.

Handwork Class

Kit Contents: (morning) Needle threader, four (4) backing squares, center squares, and enough light and dark pre-cut fabric strips to complete four 8” blocks. Plus a multipage handout with illustrated how-to directions. (afternoon) Pre-cut 14.5” square backing block, center squares and triangles, lots of precut light and dark strips (can be mixed with morning project’s strips), illustrated how-to directions.

Directions will also include how to create a nine block wall hanging using the Lucy Boston block designed especially for Road to California’s 25th Anniversary! Please note that this is a FUN, stress free technique class; and the projects will not be finished in class.

The kaleidoscope is created with elevated seed bead lines that do not rest on the fabric, but are supported above the fabric surface by other beads. Hence the name of the technique, elevated beading. The finished 3D kaleidoscope is 5-inches in diameter. The techniques covered in this workshop will give you new ideas for adding sparkling beaded texture to your art quilts. Some prior beading experience is helpful.
