{"id":2643,"date":"2014-12-02T22:50:33","date_gmt":"2014-12-03T05:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.road2cablog.com\/?p=2643"},"modified":"2014-12-02T22:50:33","modified_gmt":"2014-12-03T05:50:33","slug":"road-2015-special-exhibit-the-wicked-cherrywood-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/02\/road-2015-special-exhibit-the-wicked-cherrywood-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Road 2015 Special Exhibit: The WICKED Cherrywood Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<![CDATA[\n\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Are you a fan of the Broadway hit musical, <em>Wicked<\/em>?<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/road-2015-20th-anniversary-show\/road-2015-special-exhibit-the-wicked-cherrywood-challenge\/attachment\/new-wicked\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2653\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2653\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/New-Wicked.jpg\" alt=\"New Wicked\" width=\"334\" height=\"344\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curator Karla Overland of<a href=\"http:\/\/cherrywoodfabrics.bigcartel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Cherrywood Fabrics<\/a> had wanted to organize a quilt challenge for some time and when she saw the production on Broadway, she knew immediately this quilt challenge would be a hit \u2013 just like the musical.<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/road-2015-20th-anniversary-show\/road-2015-special-exhibit-the-wicked-cherrywood-challenge\/attachment\/wicked-logo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2648\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2648\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wicked-logo.jpg\" alt=\"Wicked logo\" width=\"381\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artists involved in this challenge chose how to interpret the theme \u201cWICKED.\u201d Most of the quilts are based off the Broadway show or The Wizard of Oz. The exhibit consists of 114 small quilts. There are three quilts attached to 6-foot banners of black felt for a total of 38 banners. The dramatic impact of the display is amazing because of the cohesive size and colors.<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/road-2015-20th-anniversary-show\/road-2015-special-exhibit-the-wicked-cherrywood-challenge\/attachment\/cherrywood1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2644\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2644\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cherrywood1.jpg\" alt=\"Cherrywood1\" width=\"640\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Submissions for the exhibit were accepted through August 1, 2014. Each quilt had to be made entirely from Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabric, with the exception of embellishments. The quilts are 20\u201d squares and used specially dyed lime greens \u2013 Cherrywood Wicked Greens \u2013 and black.<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/road-2015-20th-anniversary-show\/road-2015-special-exhibit-the-wicked-cherrywood-challenge\/attachment\/cherrywood4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2654\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2654\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cherrywood4.jpg\" alt=\"Cherrywood4\" width=\"640\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karla hopes that the WICKED Cherrywood Challenge generates excitement and appreciation for quilts done in solid colors. Says Karla, \u201cThe color is the hero here and inspired wonderful creativity from the entrants.\u201d\u00a0 Karla also added, \u201cOur suede-look fabric is so rich and saturated.\u00a0 I hope people will appreciate how strong a quilt can be just using Cherrywood.\u201d \u00a0There is a photo book available of the entire exhibit including artist statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WICKED challenge is the first of Cherrywood Challenges yet to come.
