Smith says she was &#8220;very fortunate&#8221; to have had a grandmother that quilted who patiently taught her to hand piece and quilt many years ago. Rebecca added, &#8220;I miss her every day.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/road-2016\/so-you-want-to-make-a-winning-quilt-1st-place-modern-piecing\/attachment\/null\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4325\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-4325\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/null.jpg\" alt=\"null\" width=\"322\" height=\"483\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Modern Medallion\u00a0<\/em>was started in 2014 and finished in 2015, taking 60-70 hours to quilt. The quilt was inspired by Rebecca&#8217;s\u00a0rather large collection of beautiful gradated fabrics and from the interesting curved patterns from <a href=\"http:\/\/sewkindofwonderful.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sew Kind of Wonderful<\/a>. She said she learned a lot about curved piecing on this project. \u00a0The quilting on <em>Modern Medallion\u00a0<\/em>is mostly free hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What did Rebecca think about winning 1st place for Modern Piecing?
