{"id":4591,"date":"2017-01-06T22:21:53","date_gmt":"2017-01-07T05:21:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.road2cablog.com\/?p=4591"},"modified":"2017-01-06T22:21:53","modified_gmt":"2017-01-07T05:21:53","slug":"road-2017-special-exhibit-altar-offerings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/06\/road-2017-special-exhibit-altar-offerings\/","title":{"rendered":"Road 2017 Special Exhibit: Altar Offerings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<![CDATA[Altar Offerings, a Special Exhibit curated by Jane Tenorio-Coscarelli, is an exhibit that honors \u201cour loved ones.\u201d\nIn Mexico, the tradition of altar building is practiced for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Day_of_the_Dead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dias De Los Muertos Or Day of the Dead <\/a>which occurs October 31<sup>st<\/sup> to November 2nd each year. This multi-day holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey. Building altars helps celebrate these lives.<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/special-quilt-exhibits\/road-2017-special-exhibit-altar-offerings\/attachment\/alter-quilts4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4595\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4595\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Alter-quilts4-958x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a>\nJane had the opportunity of taking an altar building class in Houston, Texas. \u00a0Being a fiber artist, she decided to design her altar in fabric. Later, when Jane was teaching her annual August retreat, she had her students create quilts for this exhibit.\nEach quilt in the exhibit had to incorporate elements found in altar building which include motifs that symbolize earth, wind, fire, light and smell. In addition, the favorite food, personal items and activities, religious items and photos of the deceased loved one were also added.<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/special-quilt-exhibits\/road-2017-special-exhibit-altar-offerings\/attachment\/alter-quilts2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4593\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4593\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Alter-quilts2-742x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"669\" \/><\/a>\nOf the quilts in the exhibit, Jane said, \u201cI am very proud of how each person expressed their loved ones. And many said it help them work through their passing. They turned their grief into a creative energy.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/special-quilt-exhibits\/road-2017-special-exhibit-altar-offerings\/attachment\/alter-quilts3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4594\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4594\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Alter-quilts3-e1483766298883.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a>\nAfter Road to California, Jane hopes the exhibit will be shown at future quilt shows in 2017.\nJane Tenorio-Coscarelli is a renowned author, artist and quilter and is the creator of 1\/4 Inch Publishing.
