{"id":5016,"date":"2017-06-30T17:31:16","date_gmt":"2017-07-01T00:31:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.road2cablog.com\/?p=5016"},"modified":"2017-06-30T17:31:16","modified_gmt":"2017-07-01T00:31:16","slug":"charity-quilt-hand-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/2017\/06\/30\/charity-quilt-hand-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Charity Quilt Hand-Off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<![CDATA[\n\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">At Road 2017, Road to California sponsored its first <a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/behind-the-scenes\/giving-back-with-love-and-stitches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roadies Give Back<\/a>\u00a0charity quilt project to benefit cancer patients at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pvhmc.org\/#About_Cancer_Care_Center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert and Beverly Lewis Cancer Care Center at Pomona Valley Hospital<\/a> .<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/road-to-california\/roadies-give-back-quilts-for-cancer-patients\/attachment\/roadies-give-back2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4367\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4367\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Roadies-Give-Back2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"472\" height=\"481\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n\n\nBefore the show,<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/faculty\/meet-road-2017-faculty-anita-grossman-solomon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Anita Grossman Solomon\u00a0<\/a>created a quilt block pattern just for this project and made it available for quilters around the country to sew the blocks that were going to be used for the project.\n[caption id=\"attachment_4662\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"528\"]<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/behind-the-scenes\/giving-back-with-love-and-stitches\/attachment\/img_1279\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4662\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4662\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1279-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a> Anita is pictured along with Matt Reese and Matt&#8217;s mom, Shellee Reese, an administrator at the Cancer Care Center.[\/caption]\nThen, on Saturday night of the show, quilters, some class teachers, and even a few vendors, got together in the Ontario Convention Center to sew the blocks together into lap size quilts as well as begin quilting the quilts.<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/behind-the-scenes\/giving-back-with-love-and-stitches\/attachment\/img_1304\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4659\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4659\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1304-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"394\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a>After the show, unfinished quilts were given to the <a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/classes\/party-time-and-roundabout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nite Owl Quilt Guild <\/a>\u00a0to finish the quilting. In the end, <strong>41 quilts<\/strong>\u00a0 were completed.\nOn June 29, 2017, Road to California owner, Matt Reese, along with his wife Jennifer, presented to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pvhmc.org\/#About_Cancer_Care_Center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert and Beverly Lewis Cancer Care Center <\/a>the Roadies Give Back quilts which will be given to cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at the center.<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/behind-the-scenes\/charity-quilt-hand-off\/attachment\/01bbbd48e9074258502a1a9f83817f513cac1c1caf\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5017\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5017\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/01bbbd48e9074258502a1a9f83817f513cac1c1caf-1024x998.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"423\" \/><\/a>\nEach unique quilt was folded into a Road to California reusable bag, accompanied with a card explaining the significance of the quilt and its care instructions.<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/behind-the-scenes\/charity-quilt-hand-off\/attachment\/0167ce4484dc83b3aa63f4047eca02fe45f8333a7c\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5023\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5023\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/0167ce4484dc83b3aa63f4047eca02fe45f8333a7c-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"559\" \/><\/a>\nWhile they were there, Matt personally distributed quilts to five patients including:<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/behind-the-scenes\/charity-quilt-hand-off\/attachment\/01fdddb631106620abf4bc46bde62856db55e31cef\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5018\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5018\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/01fdddb631106620abf4bc46bde62856db55e31cef-905x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"488\" height=\"552\" \/><\/a>\nJoseph Derowen has been a patient at the center since December, 2016. He said that he &#8220;really appreciated&#8221; the gesture because 99.9% of the time, he is cold when he receives his treatment. He was looking forward to trading his &#8220;funky jacket&#8221; for the quilt to keep him warm. Joseph&#8217;s wife, Elaine, thought receiving the quilt was &#8220;very thoughtful&#8221; and was grateful that now her husband will be &#8220;wrapped in love.&#8221; \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/behind-the-scenes\/charity-quilt-hand-off\/attachment\/019864920d8c7662500b0910bb564a835ff7863f55\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5020\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5020\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/019864920d8c7662500b0910bb564a835ff7863f55-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"453\" height=\"340\" \/><\/a>\nJoyce is battling Breast Cancer. She knew that the quilts were &#8220;a lot of work&#8221; and remarked how beautiful hers was. Joyce commented that it was &#8220;very generous for the quilters to donate their time and materials.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/behind-the-scenes\/charity-quilt-hand-off\/attachment\/01bac4b586b3aed3db0aa9da9cb84f766d909dc5d3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5022\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5022\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/01bac4b586b3aed3db0aa9da9cb84f766d909dc5d3-939x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"550\" \/><\/a>\nPetra de Leon has been battling Lymphoma since April. Petra replied in Spanish, &#8220;I am very happy to get this quilt. It is very pretty.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/behind-the-scenes\/charity-quilt-hand-off\/attachment\/01c009cfbb36c22f16d7da1180d34936318370fc04\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5019\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5019\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/01c009cfbb36c22f16d7da1180d34936318370fc04-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"469\" \/><\/a>\nRay Hardy told Matt, &#8220;No one has ever given me a quilt before. This is cool.&#8221;\nRoad to California wishes to thank everyone who participated in this special project.
