\t\t\t\tMy \u201cQuick\u201d Trip to Austin<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

This past week I made a quick trip to Austin, Texas for the Inaugural Quilt Con Show organized by the Modern Quilt Guilds<\/a>.\u00a0 Yes, I actually drove 2, 614 miles<\/a> just to go to a quilt show.\u00a0\u00a0 I am one of those \u201cqueer ducks\u201d that enjoys cross country driving.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Stevii and I left Tuesday morning and drove to Las Crusas, New Mexico.\u00a0 We saw lots of pecan groves that were just beginning to turn green.\u00a0 Wednesday evening we spent the night in Fredericksburg, Texas.\u00a0 Did you know that they raise Angora Goats on their ranches in the hill country of Texas?\u00a0 We saw more goats than cattle and even saw a few buffalo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

We spent Thursday at the show.\u00a0 Lots of quilts were on display and I am beginning to understand and appreciate what is a \u201cModern\u201d Quilt.\u00a0 There were quilts with piecing but not necessarily repetitive patterns.\u00a0 Many of the modern quilters incorporate negative space in their quilts and they do a great job of quilting those areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Quilt Con invited their sponsors to participate by having a booth at the show.\u00a0 Some that I visited with were fabric or book companies such as Andover<\/a>, Robert Kaufman<\/a>, Marcus Brothers<\/a>, Michael Miller<\/a>, Moda<\/a> and Stash Books<\/a>. Each of them were offering either \u201cmake it and take it ideas\u201d, giving demonstrations, offering product information to the attendees or photo ops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

We spent the day visiting with people we knew, looking at quilts, checking out the vendors, shopping and just having a good time.\u00a0 I enjoyed attending Quilt Con.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Friday we began our trip home.\u00a0 We stopped in Van Buren, Texas to have lunch at a Mexican Restaurant named Chueys<\/a>, which had been a favorite stopping place for the late John Madden, the football guy.\u00a0 The building was painted inside and out with the brightest neon green, fushia, and orange.\u00a0 It really shows up among the West Texas brown scenery. \u00a0\u00a0We arrived home on Saturday.\u00a0 You can really cover the miles in West Texas with cruise control and an 80 MPH speed limit.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Now, I will have to work on the class schedules and other things for the January 2014 Road to California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
