Who doesn\u2019t\nneed ways to de-stress? One great way to de-stress is to go back to our quilting\nroots and do some hand piecing.<\/p>\n\n\n

\"De-Stress<\/figure>\n\n\n

Pat Yamin<\/a>, owner of Come Quilt Me<\/a> and a well-known quilter from New York, led a hand piecing class, Time on my Hands, <\/em>at Road 2019. Hand piecing is a \u201clost art\u201d says Pat because \u201cit takes time.\u201d With a background in psychology, Pat easily sees the connection between mental well-being<\/strong> and hand piecing. \u201cIt is tactile<\/strong> and healing<\/strong>. Small pieces of fabric are manipulated using your hands\u2014something you can\u2019t get from sewing on a machine.\u201d Another benefit is there is no rush<\/strong> to get it done. \u201cYou can take it with you traveling, to doctors\u2019 appointments, or any place you know you will have some down time. Hand piecing is very portable<\/strong> and gives you the feeling of immediate success<\/strong>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n

Time on my Hands <\/em>was an all-day class. Students received\na hand piecing quilt kit to work on and everyone was encouraged to just \u201ctake\nyour time\u201d and de-stress. Because there was no sewing machine noise, students\nwere also engaged in great conversations and sharing.<\/p>\n\n\n

Rebecca took\nthe class to relax. \u201cIt\u2019s a great way to de-stress.\u201d While she has been\nquilting for 10 years, Rebecca was brand new to hand piecing and liked how it was\nso \u201cincredibly easy.\u201d She also liked how hand piecing provides a\u201d connection to\nour past because it is what our ancestors did.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n

Gwen shared\nthat because hand piecing is \u201cso relaxing it is also a great way to be\ncreative. You can really get in the Zen\nZone<\/em>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n

Anita is\nbrand new to quilting; she has made one quilt. She took the class because of\nhand piecing\u2019s history. \u201cI love 1930\u2019s fabric. It reminds me of my grandmother\u2019s\nhome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

For\ninspiration, Pat shared a quilt that she had found at an auction.<\/h2>\n\n\n

The quilt was made from feed sack prints from the 1930\u2019s and 40\u2019s and needed some hand piecing repair work. She also added the sashes to give it a different look. She liked how it turned out so much that she enlisted John Flynn <\/a>to make kits for her out of 1930\u2019s reproduction fabrics and that is what she uses in her hand piecing classes. \u201cIt saves time so the students don\u2019t have to cut out the individual pieces and they have more time to do the hand piecing.<\/p>\n\n\n

A few of the\nstudents took the class not only to de-stress but because they were familiar\nwith Pat and wanted to learn more from her. <\/h2>\n\n\n

Cindy has\nbeen quilting for 30 years and was familiar with piecing. She came to the class\nbecause of Pat and the camaraderie of the students. \u201cPat is fabulous. She is\ncalm and knows her subject matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Joe has been\nquilting for over 20 years. When he first started quilting, all he did was\nhandwork. While he has known Pat for over 20 years (they met when he was\nworking part time in a quilt shop) he still wanted to take this class because \u201cI\nlearn something new every time I take a class from Pat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Piecing and quilting on a sewing machine are rewarding. But if you are looking for a project without a deadline<\/strong>, can be taken anywhere<\/strong>, and encourages comradery<\/strong> as you aim to de-stress<\/strong>, nothing can compare to hand piecing. \u00a0<\/p>\n]]>\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
