She received $5,000 from Sponsor, Moore\u2019s Sewing Center.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Directors-Award-1.jpg\" alt=\"art quilt Road to California Quilt Show\" class=\"wp-image-6490\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quilter since the 1980&#8217;s,<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/jbq\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" Joanne Baeth  (opens in a new tab)\"> Joanne Baeth <\/a>started making art quilts after she retired from a career in teaching. Her favorite subject for her art quilts is creating realistic scenes in nature as evidenced by her winning entry, <em>Sea Breeze<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/joanne-baeth-portrait.jpg\" alt=\"art quilt Road to California Quilt Show\" class=\"wp-image-6492\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\ninspiration for <em>Sea Breeze <\/em>was\ntwofold. For two months every summer, Joanne and her husband salmon fishon the Oregon coast. The <strong>coastal scenes<\/strong> that surround them for\nthose two months was part of her inspiration. More inspiration for this art\nquilt came from her sister who has a beach house. On one of the walls of her\nhouse, her sister has hanging several floats that she has collected from her\nwalks on the beach. Those <strong>floats<\/strong>\nprovided the rest of Joanne\u2019s inspiration for <em>Sea Breeze. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joanne began\nthis art quilt right after Road to California 2018 ended. She started with painting\nand cutting out the floats then thread painting the crab pots and small\nbackground trees. Joanne shared that the work on the floats was done while she\nwas camping in California. The bait shop, boats, and small buildings in the\nbackground were cut out and fused one board at a time. The roofs were painted\nand heat distressed for more texture. The sky was painted and the water was\nconstructed with many strips of fabric. Extensive machine quilting completed\nthe art quilt.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Director\u2019s Choice Award is chosen by Road to California\u2019s owner, <a href=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/road-to-california\/matt-reese-roads-show-director-and-lawyer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Matt Reese. (opens in a new tab)\">Matt Reese.<\/a> \u00a0Joanne didn\u2019t find out that she had won this prestigious award until she walked in to the show on Thursday and saw it hanging in the front of the Exhibit Hall. <\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/road2ca.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Directors-Award2-1024x880.jpg\" alt=\"art quilt Road to California Quilt Show\" class=\"wp-image-6491\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She immediately\ncalled her husband and a few friends to share the good news. Joanne said she was\n\u201cthrilled\u201d to receive this award.
