A popular $5.00 Lecture<\/a> at Road to California 2019 shared tips on how to be successful with fabric inkjet printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Led by Stephanie of easyFAb Design Studio<\/a>, her company has perfected the skill of taking pictures, downloading them to an inkjet printer and printing them on printable inkjet fabrics to create memory quilts, family trees, pillows, silk scarves, tote bags, kid\u2019s photo books, and other small keepsakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fabric\ninkjet printing involves four things in combination:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Photo<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
    \"inkjet<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    If the photo is in a camera or phone, download it to a computer. Hard\ncopy photos can be scanned into the computer. Edit the photographs for cropping,\ncolor saturation, color density, brightness and contrast. Be careful to maintain\na resolution in the range of 150-300dpi.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Printer<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
      \"inkjet<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

      Fabric inkjet printing requires Inkjet printers. Inkjet printers are the\nmost common consumer home printers on the market today. Laser printers do not\nwork with inkjet fabric sheets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Because printers are different, become familiar with basic printing\nfeatures as they relate to fabric inkjet printing such as paper tray versus top\nfeed; adjustment for height of printhead for paper thickness; and ink\nsaturation percentages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Printer Ink<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        There are two types of ink that work with printable fabrics: dye-water\nbased and pigment inks. Most home inkjet printers come with dye-based inks.\nWhile pigment ink printers are preferred for fabric inkjet printing, they are\nhard to find. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • Inkjet Printable Fabrics<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Inkjet fabrics come in both cotton blends and silks. These specialized\nfabrics are coated with chemicals that stabilize the ink, enabling the fabric\nto take high resolution prints without bleeding, allows for washing, and lets\nthe fabric hold its original drape and feel. The fabrics used in fabric inkjet\nprinting are backed with paper which allows it to flow through an inkjet\nprinter. Because each manufacturer\u2019s chemical formula is different, make sure\nto closely follow their directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Other fabric\ninkjet printing tips Stephanie gave were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • When considering what photographs to\nuse, keep in mind that inkjet fabric paper is limited in size (8.5\u201d X 11\u201d) as\nto what goes through the printer. <\/li>
          • Always test the printer\u2019s coverage\nand saturation by first printing on a small piece of printable fabric.<\/li>
          • Do a test-print on paper to check for\ncolor, layout, and size.<\/li>
          • Remove loose threads and dust from\nprintable fabric before printing. <\/li>
          • After printing, let photo rest before\nrinsing and washing the fabric. Beware that shrinkage might occur.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
