Congratulations to Janet Stone for winning the Marie White Masterpiece Award for her quilt, Crazy for Ewe. <\/em>Janet received $7,500 from Sponsor, Road to California<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Janet Stone\nbegan her quilting adventure in the late 1990\u2019s. She said she got serious about\nquilting in 2006 after she bought a \u201creally nice new sewing machine.\u201d Janet made\nher first \u201cshow quilt\u201d in 2008 and has been hooked on making quilts for show\never since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making Crazy\nfor Ewe<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Crazy for\nEwe <\/em>was inspired by\nwool applique and crazy quilting, both of which Janet loves. She decided to\ncombine the two but used flannel fabrics instead of wool because there are \u201cso\nmany pretty commercial flannels on the market these days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It took Janet\n9 months to complete Crazy for Ewe, <\/em>which was a little longer than her\nusual because of the extra quilting that she did. Janet quilted the blocks\nseparately. Before she attached them to the background, she quilted from the\nback where the blocks were going to go, then appliqued the blocks on so it\nbecame a 2-sided quilt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Janet has a\nstyle that is easily recognizable. Her quilts are known to feature letters of\nthe alphabet and sheep. When asked about her trademark symbols, Janet replied, \u201c(the\nsheep) are not trademarked, they are just the way I design sheep. I use them in\na lot of my quilts because I love sheep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the\nMarie White Masterpiece Award?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Marie White Masterpiece Award is the second highest cash award given at Road to California\u2019s Quilt Contest. It is named for Marie White, who was the mother of Road to California\u2019s former owner, Carolyn Reese.<\/a> Marie was very active in the quilting and doll making world until she passed away in 2011, six weeks shy of her 93rd birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An anonymous\ndonor approached Carolyn and offered to sponsor this first runner-up award<\/strong>\non two conditions: One, that she, the donor, would remain anonymous and Two, that\nRoad to California call the prize, \u201cThe Marie White Masterpiece Award.\u201d Road\ngladly agreed to her terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winning the\nAward<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What was\nJanet doing when she got word that she had won this prestigious award? \u201cI was\nin my basement working on my next quilt! I never got the promised email on\nTuesday night, so I kept perusing Facebook, knowing one of my Facebook friends\nwould be attending the sneak preview. Sure enough, Wednesday night, I saw a\npicture of my quilt and the ribbon that said Marie White Masterpiece Quilt!!!\u201d\nMarie was \u201cthrilled\u201d with her award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, in 2019, Janet won Road to California\u2019s Best of Show <\/a>award. How did winning the Marie White Masterpiece Award in 2020 compare to last year\u2019s prize? \u201cIt\u2019s pretty much right up there with the Best of Show I won last year. I mean with the competition as amazing as it is at Road to California, I could not be more thrilled to place in the top awards with any of my quilts!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s in\nJanet\u2019s future?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Janet said\nshe is going to use her prize money to help pay down the deductible on her\nmedical insurance as her husband\nwas in the hospital for 4 days the week prior to this win. She also figures\nthat purchasing some more fabric and thread will also be sneaked in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Janet is currently\nworking on her next alphabet quilt. This next quilt be number 22<\/em><\/strong>\nin her series. She\u2019s hoping to have it finished this spring and will probably\nbe visiting California next January. She\u2019s keeping her fingers crossed!!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
