Lucky to Win<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The winner for the Road 2020 Best of Show, Marilyn Badger<\/a>, is no stranger to winning awards<\/a> and being a featured artist<\/a> at Road to California. Keeping that in mind, Marilyn commented that winning this coveted Best of Show award at the 25th<\/sup> Anniversary Show was special as \u201cI know how difficult Best of Show awards are to come by \u2013 the competition is incredible today! I also know how lucky I am when I win, whatever the award.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting Started\nin Quilting <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Marilyn\u2019s journey\nin quilting began in the mid-70s while she and her husband were living on their\nboat in Marina del Rey, California. It was all hand piecing back then because\nof the lack of room for a sewing machine. When they moved ashore in 1986,\nMarilyn became interested in machine quilting and purchased her first longarm\nmachine in 1991.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspiration\nfor Christmas at St. Andrews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Claudia\nClark Myers came up with the design and challenged Marilyn to use the plaid\nfabric in the background. After all the piecing, appliqu\u00e9 and quilting, Marilyn\nreally \u201chad fun\u201d adding the hand details and trims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It took\nMarilyn about 9 months to complete Christmas in St. Andrews<\/em>. She said\nthat she tends to be somewhat obsessive about getting a quilt finished before\nstarting another one. Quite a few were waiting in line when she was working on\nthis one. By the time it was finished, she was more than ready to move on to\nthe next one. Marilyn said she really learned a lot about matching plaid seams\non this one. She eventually used 6 yards of fabric by the time she fussy cut\neverything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winning Road\n2020 Best of Show<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

How did Marilyn hear the news that she had won? Another Road 2020 winner, Janet Stone<\/a>, sent Marilyn a message late Wednesday night, January 22nd<\/sup>, that Marilyn had won Road 2020 Best of Show. Marilyn was \u201cflabbergasted\u201d that she had won. At first, she thought it must have been a mistake until she got a second message from another friend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s not\nsure what she will do with the prize money but feels that she\u2019s \u201csure I\u2019ll\nthink of something fun to do with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s Next?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Marilyn just finished a new quilt in time to enter it in the AQS Daytona Beach <\/a>show this month (February 2020) and is adding lots of hand embroidery to a new quilt which she hopes to have ready as an entry for Road 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
