An Australian, Jen Kingwell describes herself as \u201ca traditional quilter with a modern twist.\u201d In her perfect world she would hand stitch everything but with today\u2019s busy lifestyle, she does machine piecing as well. Hand appliqu\u00e9 and quilting are among her favorite pastimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jen \u201cstumbled\u201d into quilting 30 years ago. She is a teacher, author, and designer for Moda Fabrics<\/a>.  Jen has owned quilt stores for over 15 years and currently owns amitie Textiles<\/a><\/em> in Melbourne Australia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jen taught 7 handwork classes<\/a> at Road to California 2020.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She found\nRoad 2020 to be a \u201cfantastic show\u201d that was \u201cwell organized.\u201d Jen added that\nshe had a \u201creally nice experience\u201d teaching every day of the show where she met\n\u201cthe loveliest ladies\u201d who were enthusiastic and willing to try whatever she\ngave them to do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We stopped\nin during Jen\u2019s Creative Hand Quilting and Finishing<\/em> class and talked to\nsome of her students:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debra was\nfrom Discovery Bay, California. She said she got lots of good information from\nJen and that the class was fun, casual and relaxing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Road to\nCalifornia attendee since the show was in Anaheim, Elaine has been quilting for\nover 26 years. Even though she lives local (in Orange County), she likes to\nstay overnight in one of Road\u2019s host hotels so she can walk over to the show.\nAt Road 2020, Elaine took  2 classes. \u201cI haven\u2019t\ndone any sewing since last January at Road 2019 so I\u2019m excited to pick it up\nagain. I like handwork; repetition is relaxing. Jen is excellent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kim and\nBrenda are sisters-in-law from San Diego, California. They have been attending\nRoad to California together since 2011. Brenda started quilting 15 years ago.\nShe sold Kim her old machine and taught her how to quilt 13 years ago. Brenda\nsaid, \u201cNow Kim is teaching me!!\u201d They belong to Sew Easy Girls <\/em>where\nthey sit and sew every Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Sewing Tip From Jen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One tip that Brenda learned from Jen was how to use thread from the right end of the spool. Thread your needle first, then cut the thread from the spool. Doing it this way, the thread and the knot will go with the nap of the thread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
