Cloth Dolls Tell Their Stories

This exhibit showcases artists exploring remembrance, heritage and celebration through cloth dolls. Traditionally, dolls were created to represent a miniature human form, often used as children’s toys. These artists have transformed the meaning of the plaything by pouring tales and imagination into each doll while emphasizing the fun and whimsical. Carolyn Reese, owner of Road to California, has a special interest in this exhibit because two of the dolls in the collection were made by her mother, Marie White. One is a doll Marie created from a photograph of her mother, Oda Anderson, taken in 1934. The second doll, “Blanche” is one that Marie designed, taught classes and also sold patterns. Blanche was created in honor of Blanche Young, a well-known quilter and author, who was the teacher that started Carolyn in the quilting world. A free to the public Artist Reception is being held Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 5:00 –7:00 PM. The Ontario Museum of History & Art is located at 225 S. Euclid Ave. Ontario, CA 91762. Gallery Hours are Noon to 4 PM, Thursday through Sunday. Admission is free. For more information call (909) 395-2510. ]]>

There’s A New App In Town: Road To California

Monday, January 18th, 2016

Road to California App.Road App 3 Since May 2015, we have been working on this new application. Says Matt Reese, Show Manager, “The Road to California App is bringing our show in to the future. Using the app provides reliability knowing we can share the most current information about the show in real time.” Another benefit of the app: it supports Road to California’s efforts in sustaining a green environment. The app is replacing the Show Book, reducing the huge amount of paper used to publish the books.

What are some of the app features?

  • A map to help guests locate everything at the show: Classes, Vendors, Special Exhibits, and even food
  • A personal schedule so guests can plan out what to see and do, including the $5 Lectures.
  • A listing of Exhibitors so guests can locate them on the showroom floor. Guests can keep track of the products they are interested in, and have the exhibitors’ contact information for after the show.
  • A listing of Teachers, their classes, and their contact information.
  • A listing of Sponsors.
  • Information about the Daily Drawings.
  • Menus for each of the food buffets served each day.Road App4
In addition, guests can join in the fun sharing their pictures, comments, reviews and ratings of the show with other guests. Users can even earn badges for their participation with the app!!

How do you get started?

To get the free app, for Apple users, go to the App Store and search for Road to California. Google users need to go to the Play Store and search for RoadToCalifornia (all one word). It’s best to download the app before you come to the show so that you can become familiar with its features.Road App 2

What if I don’t have a smart device? Or I forget to bring my smart device?

No worries. There will be two iPad stations in the Convention Center (each having five iPads running the app) available for guests to use. Road Staff will be on hand to answer questions and guide guests with their app questions. And for those guests who just can’t manage the app this year, there will be a small number of traditional Show Books available. The Road to California App allows guests to customize their Road 2016 experience and keep their information long after the show has ended. Carolyn Reese, show owner, is thrilled to offer this new addition. “We are excited to provide better and more information to our guests using the app than we ever could with a show book.” What feature are you looking forward to using on the Road to California App? ]]>

Road 2016 Marketplace: Meet Hoffman Fabrics

Friday, January 15th, 2016

Last year, Road introduced Marketplace where top manufacturers in the quilting industry shared their knowledge and expertise directly with our guests. Located right in the center of the main show floor, Marketplace is the destination for innovation and inspiration on the latest and most popular quilting products. This year, there will be 6 companies in Marketplace, including Hoffman Fabrics.new Hoffman logo

Hoffman Fabrics was founded in 1924 as Hoffman Woolens by Rube P. Hoffman. As a wholesale converter of the highest-quality cottons and blends, Hoffman Fabrics designs and creates more than 800 innovative screenprints and handmade batik fabrics each year. They employ a team of in-house textile artists to create fabric collections for the quilting/home-sewing industry, as well as all types of manufacturing. The company’s new logo design is their first change since 1976. It is only the third version of the Hoffman brand mark. Did you know that Hoffman Fabrics was also behind the creation of California “surf fashion?”

[youtube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZt2n6Ujc9c[/youtube]

At the Hoffman Marketplace booth, they will be showing video and talking about how they design and make their world-famous batiks designed in the U.S. and produced on the island of Bali. Very new to their Hoffman Bali production is their Indah line (under the Me+You brand) of solid hand-dyes and minimalist accent batiks designed for the modern quilting aesthetic. Among popular designers working with their Indah fabrics are Sam Hunter and Latifah Saafir.

Hoffman will also be talking about the “new” Hoffman Challenge, which has been reinvented and refreshed for 2016. For the first time in its 28-year history, the Challenge has two selected Challenge fabrics, a butterfly print (style #N4240) from their digitally printed Crystalia collection. Participants can use the Challenge fabric in the 132-Opal (white) or 213-Onyx (black) color way – or both! Also a first: Hoffman will be accepting online submissions for the initial vetting of artwork for the contest.Hoffman Challenge bw_web Aurifil is co-sponsor of the Hoffman Challenge and has designed a special thread collection complementing the fabrics.aurifil challenge box_web aurifil box challenge_web And since Hoffman is now a leading producer of digitally printed fabrics for the quilting/sewing industry, they will also be talking about digital prints at their booth as well. Digital printing lets Hoffman offer an unlimited color palette so their digital print fabrics burst with infinite colors, shades, layers and textures.Hoffman_Quiltmaker2016Jan_Skylines To learn more about Hoffman Fabrics, please visit their web site. ]]>

Road 2016: Service and Security

Tuesday, January 12th, 2016

Since 1998, The Ontario Convention Center has been the home of Road to California.Ontario Convention Center

Road to California is the convention center’s largest client, taking up not only the entire convention center footage, but additional tent space as well. This year’s show will feature

173 classes, lectures and special events taught by internationally recognized experts

Over 1,000 quilts on display

220 Retailers from 37 states and 7 foreign countries set up in over 700 merchant booths

[caption id="attachment_3709" align="aligncenter" width="525"]Photo courtesy of Gregory Case Photography Photo courtesy of Gregory Case Photography[/caption] The Ontario Convention Center provides great service to the Reese family and their Road guests:438 Desiree has been a convention center assistant to the Reese family for three years. Her job is to provide hospitality items like meals, beverages, and water to the Reeses so that they have the nourishment and energy to run the second biggest quilt show in the United States. Desiree says of her experience, “I love working with the Reese family. Carolyn is a sweetheart and everyone is so kind.” Desiree loves watching the show come all together, especially with all the quilts.Tina Tina is the Director of Event Services for the Ontario Convention Center. She oversees all event logistics, directing the many managers on staff. However, with Road to California, she personally oversees all aspects of this event because Road is the convention center’s biggest client. She has worked with the Reese family ever since they first came to the convention center in 1998. Tina works 14 hour days during the week of the show, supervising the convention center workers like greeters, janitorial, and security guards; serving as the direct contact to the police and fire departments; and troubleshooting situations that arise. For instance, last year during Road 2015, Ontario experienced extremely high winds. To accommodate for this hazard, Tina and her staff worked quickly and efficiently to change the bus drop off locations, block off dangerous entrances, reinforce the tent areas, maintain crowd management and hire additional staff to pick up items that were blowing away. Regarding the show, Tina admires “the extensive art work involved with the quilts.” It is a joy for her to see how the quilts have evolved over the years.download Large crowds, over a hundred classes, and numerous vendors require extra safety precautions. For the past five years, the Reese family has hired special security detail to watch out for their guests. Their security personnel have extensive experience dealing with loss prevention with a big box retailer for over 20 years. They walk the show floor and hallways, scrutinizing body movements and behavior as they watch out for shoplifters and employees stealing from their employers. What advice do they have for our guests to help prevent possible losses?
  • Keep bags and purses close and in front of you.
  • Use Sack Sitters to manage your purchases.
  • At night, leave the convention center in groups.
Road to California is always watching out for our guests, especially when it comes to service and security. ]]>

Meet Road 2016 Marketplace Vendor: American Made Brand

Wednesday, December 30th, 2015

Last year, Road introduced Marketplace where top manufacturers in the quilting industry shared their knowledge and expertise directly with our guests. Located right in the center of the main show floor, Marketplace is the destination for innovation and inspiration on the latest and most popular quilting products. This year, there will be 6 companies in Marketplace. This post features our second vendor, American Made Brand.

Not Just Made Here, Grown Herequiltfestival_2015_amb.indd

That’s the apt slogan of American Made Brand fabric, a division of Clothworks. From farm to fabric, the cotton is grown, spun, woven, dyed and rolled onto bolts in the U.S. People often comment on the color saturation and soft hand of the fabrics, and longarmers delight in how it quilts up! It is surprising to learn how difficult it was to bring an entirely American-made fabric to market. While our country produces huge amounts of high quality cotton, the supply chain has evolved to direct nearly all of it for immediate export to overseas mills. Meanwhile, textile manufacturing in the U.S. uses imported raw materials. It is perfectly legal for goods made from imported cotton to be labeled “Made in the U.S.A.” Clothworks’ owners, Ted and Candice Hoffman, wondered if they could do better. They had a vision of an entirely home grown fabric. Connecting the farmers to the yarn and weaving mills seemed logical, yet the process took years to achieve!AMB image2 AMB’s designers worked with quilters and quilt pattern makers around the country to develop a range of shades to encompass the American vision. From clear, vibrant tones to soft pastels and neutrals, AMB’s palette of 75 colors can fulfill any creative vision in this big country of ours. Thirteen of the colors are brand new for January 2016!AMB newcolors_2015_300x300 This is American Made Brand’s first year at Road to California. On display in their booth will be a gorgeous, oversized interpretive American Flag quilt. Also featured will be a stunning new Block of the Month quilt, Empire Place, from Sassafras Lane patterns. Empire Place is a contemporary paper-pieced quilt inspired by the amazing Art Deco era buildings in Chicago. Nine different diamond block designs create this modern quilt. Guests who come by their booth can pick up their free 2 1/2″ square AMB sampler pack and can sign up to learn of upcoming AMB challenges and offers. Support the U.S. economy by asking for American Made Brand solids at local quilt shops and making your next quilt an all-American one!AMB 20141007_163343 For more information, please visit their website.]]>

Road 2016 Faculty and Vendor: Meet Michele Crawford Plus A Giveaway

Wednesday, December 16th, 2015

Michele Crawford will be teaching on Monday, 1003R Carpenter Star, and an evening class on Saturday, 6066C Crumb Quilting

Michele’s company, Flower Box Quilts, will have a booth on the vendor floor.Michele Crawford - head shot - 5 x 5

Michele Crawford has a long history with sewing, crafting, and pattern making. Since the age of 9, she has always had a needle and thread in her hands whether it was stamped cross stitch, crewel, crochet, knitting, embroidery or sewing clothes. Michele taught herself to sew. Her first projects were sewn on her grandmother’s featherweight sewing machine. Michele’s first business was making woven potholders on a loom and selling them in her neighborhood. While in high school, she wanted to be a fashion designer and go to New York City to school. She ended up being an elementary school teacher, getting married, starting a family, and then began her life as a self-employed designer and business owner. Michele’s first business was Cross ‘n Quilt. Started in 1986, Michele designed and sold her patterns combining counted cross stitch and quilting. Through this experience, Michele has created over 4,500 published sewing, needlework and quilting designs in over 40 different publications. She has worked with over 35 fabric, thread and batting companies to date. In 2002, a few quilting magazines started offering kits for the projects in their magazines featuring new fabric collections, and that was the start of Michele’s internet business, Flower Box Quilts. By 2008, she began designing her own quilt patterns to sell on her website as Flower Box Quilts, and also offered other quilt fabric kits exclusive to her site.Michele Crawford booth The Flower Box Quilts booth is known as the “happy booth.” She likes to showcase many different styles and techniques to inspire her customers. Featured in her booth are seasonal and non-seasonal fabrics as well as 100 of her original quilt patterns including those for quilts of all sizes, runners, place mats, pillows, Christmas ornaments and tree skirts, and other decorative items. She still likes to combine counted cross stitch with quilting and has started to offer other types of handwork including working with wool felt and embroidery, and hexagons.Michele Crawford quilt Michele is looking forward to teaching her two classes. She enjoys interacting and being with the quilters, and sharing her tips and techniques for quilting. She wants her students to have FUN and reminds them that there are many ways and techniques to achieve the same results in quilting. Her motto? “We cannot achieve perfection but we can strive for excellence.” She especially loves it when she sees the “light bulb” come on in a student’s face when they have tried something new that she taught them and it works for them. There are several sewing tips that Michele likes to share. One is Don’t wash fabric before piecing. She believes that the finishes help achieve a “cleaner” cut with a rotary cutter. Some other tips: Iron as you go; It’s OK to sew over pins; and Use 100% Cotton thread. To learn more of Michele’s tips, you’ll just have to take one of her classes!! Michele is looking forward to being at Road 2016: “I LOVE the amazing and positive energy of all the quilters – vendors – staff at Road! The extreme excitement of being at the cutting edge of quilting and being inspired by so many incredibly talented and creative people is mind boggling, humbling, and fabulous!” To learn more about Michele, please visit her web site.Michele Crawford JCTS cover Now for the giveaway: Michele is giving away 5 copies of her book, Just Cut The Scrap. To enter, simply comment below what you are looking forward to the most at Road 2016. You have until midnight on Sunday, December 20, 2016 to enter. Five lucky winners will be chosen using Random Number Generator and will be notified on Monday, December 21, 2016. Good luck to all who enter. ]]>

Road 2016 Special Services: Quilt Appraisals

Saturday, December 12th, 2015

Professional Association of Appraisers-Quilted Textiles will be on hand to give qualified appraisals for any attendee. Appraisers are certified by the American Quilters Society. For a nominal fee, they will give verbal or written notification of a quilt’s value. [caption id="attachment_3646" align="aligncenter" width="501"]Violet V Photo courtesy of Gregory Case Photography[/caption] Violet Vaughnes, AQS (American Quilters Society) Certified Quilt Appraiser and member of PAAQT (Professional Association of Appraisers-Quilted Textiles), is leading the appraisal team at Road 2016. She enjoys “not knowing what the next quilt I see will be and the satisfaction of helping the customer when they say they learned a lot about their quilt.” Violet explains there are four benefits to having a quilt appraised: 1) Insurance replacement for shipping loss and protection while hanging in a show; 2) Donation value for a museum or a charity; 3) Fair market value- getting an idea of what a quilt MIGHT sell for in today’ marketplace; & 4) To accompany a quilt being gifted. What can guests expect when they bring their quilt to Road 2016 to be appraised? Violet recommended that guests stay with their quilt and not leave their quilt at the booth. Though someone is at the booth at all times, the appraisers are busy and can’t be responsible for a missing quilt. Besides, they prefer that a customer is present to discuss the particulars of the quilt. Violet suggested that when the appraisal is completed, guests can leave their quilt with Road’s Sack Sitters while they enjoy the show or take a class. [caption id="attachment_3648" align="aligncenter" width="526"]Photo courtesy of Gregory Case Photography Photo courtesy of Gregory Case Photography[/caption] There are two types of appraisals that are given at the show: verbal and written. Verbal appraisals cost $25.00 per quilt and are not considered an official appraisal, as there is nothing in writing. It is actually a consultation for information that the customer requests to be given such as: What era did the quilt come from? Can you date the fabrics? What kind of quilt is it? How do I care for the quilt? Is it ordinary or rare? How do I go about selling the quilt? A written appraisal is a document noting many factors about the quilt such as has the quilt-maker won awards, has the quilt been published and where was it published, the quilting styles used, etc. In writing the appraisal, the appraiser follows USPAP (Uniformed Standards of Appraisal Practice) standards. A photo of the quilt on the day it was examined is also included in the report. A written appraisal is researched; it usually takes 20 minutes to examine, measure, photograph, and gather information about the quilt and values are not given immediately. Reports are sent to the customer in 2-3 weeks following the show’s closure. The cost for a written appraisal is $50 per quilt. [caption id="attachment_3649" align="aligncenter" width="537"]Photo courtesy of Gregory Case Photography Photo courtesy of Gregory Case Photography[/caption] How are written reports used for future insurance needs? Customers can send the written appraisal to their insurance company to be added as a rider to their homeowner’s policy It is preferable to have quilts appraised when they are in good condition “After the fact” appraisal, such as stolen, damaged, after a fire, etc. may not get full value reimbursement. Violet is always on the lookout for interesting quilts. When asked for an interesting quilt experience, she told the story of when a few years ago, while driving, she saw an old and worn quilt hanging on the porch of a house. Naturally curious, she pulled over to the side of the road to observe the quilt through her rear view mirror instead of getting out of her car and approaching the house. Why didn’t she get out of the car? Said Violet, “There were several men in motorcycle clothes on the porch. I’m curious, but not stupid.” Appointments for quilt appraisals during Road 2016 are recommended. While drop-ins are welcomed, they are done on a time available basis. To schedule your appointment for a quilt appraisal during Road 2016, email Violet directly at getfruit@aol.com. . ]]>
